The University of Sydney has appointed intellectual property law and theory expert Michael Spence as its new vice-chancellor and principal.
At Oxford, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy and a post-graduate diploma in philosophy and, most recently, he headed up the university’s social sciences division.
A specialist in intellectual property theory, his work in the field includes books and articles on intellectual property law and the law of obligations, focusing particularly on suggested ethical and economic justification of the existing regimes. He is also a consultant to London Law fir, Olswang, and serves as a WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Centre panellist.
Spence takes over from Professor Gavin Brown, who retires in July after 12 years in the position.
