Australia became a party on Thursday to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, joining 40 other countries that have acceded or ratified the protocol.

The convention provides that if an effective remedy is not available domestically, disability rights issues can be taken to the International Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Professor Ron McCallum AO, an Australian industrial law expert who has vision impairment, was elected to fill one of the 12 positions on the committee.
