With Law Week kicking off nationally next Monday, lawyers around the country are gearing up for a week of activities designed to bring the legal community together and bridge the gap between the profession and the community at large.

Kicking off the festivities in Sydney will be the 2009 Law Week Breakfast, hosted by the City of Sydney Society - part of the NSW Law Society. The breakfast, to be held at the City Tattersalls Club, will feature a panel discussion on the theme "A discussion of Interest to Lawyers and the Wider Community". Lawyers Weekly senior reporter Laura MacIntyre will be a guest speaker on the panel, along with The Australian's legal affairs editor Chris Merritt and New South Wales Law Society media officer Maria Iannotti.

The week will also feature a range of educational seminars for the community, on diverse topics ranging from mental health, to older persons and the law, careers in law, youth and the law, animal law, and what criminal records can mean for employment.

Check your local law society website for details of events in your state.
