Recent Deakin University law graduate Anu Ambikaipalan has been awarded the Victoria Law Foundation Chief Justice's Medal for Excellence and Community Service 2009.
In addition to the volunteer case work she undertook at Springvale Monash Legal Service, Anu worked as a Congressional Intern in the United States, where she helped draft legislation which promoted the introduction of support programs for youths leaving detention centres.
"What is particularly impressive and inspiring is Anu's ongoing efforts to encourage other students to work with disadvantaged communities," Kirby said.
Anu said she was surprised and honoured to receive the medal.
"The community work I have done has been mutually beneficial - I have gained a lot from it and am pleased that in small ways I have been able to make a difference. I am sure that I will continue to undertake some form of pro bono community service work throughout my career," she said.
