THE NSW and Victorian Governments are looking at introducing new regulations for the use and operation of solariums after the release of new guidelines by Standards Australia.
The new standards also seek to ensure people supervising sunbeds have appropriate training in the use of equipment and assessment of skin types and that clients fill out skin assessment forms.
Craig Sinclair, Chair of the Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Committee, said the new standard sent a strong health message to industry and consumers.
"With the full support of industry and key health groups, this standard will lead to real public health gains by restricting underage access, the use of tanning units by people with pale white skin that always burns and never tans, and unsupervised operation," he said on Sunday.
From February, the Victorian Government will introduce changes to the management license for tanning units.
Meanwhile, the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change is conducting a review into the introduction of solarium regulations and has sought submissions until February 6.
