ONLINE LEGAL journal Justinian has again listed this year’s NSW applicants for appointment as senior counsel.
The percentage of female applicants has been dwindling steadily, Ackland reports. In 2005 10.4 per cent of applications were made by women, while in 2006 the figure was 9 per cent and last year 8.4 per cent of the 119 applicants were female.
“At this rate it won’t be long before the bar runs out of females of any serious seniority available for elevation. Something is skew-whiff,” Ackland writes.
About 63 per cent on the 2008 list have applied before, close to the usual rate. Last year 23 new silks were appointed, just over 19 per cent of the total who applied.
