THE QUEENSLAND University of Technology (QUT) has formed a partnership with researcher Richard Jefferson and his open-access research institute, Cambia, to help simplify and improve the transparency of the international patent system.

Cambia is an independent, international not-for profit research organisation which was responsible for the development of the “Patent Lens”. The Patent Lens is a free, open-access patent information resource which allows the public to explore, understand and use the patent system. QUT Professor Brian Fitzgerald said it is now the preferred patent search tool for public agencies worldwide, including the UN and the US National Institute of Health.

QUT will work with Jefferson to further develop the Patent Lens, including extending it for the emerging patent systems of Asia, and in particular, China.

QUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Commercialisation) Professor Arun Sharma said that the partnership would add an exiting dimension to the university’s research portfolio.

“The partnership will complement QUT’s existing strengths in the are of open-access innovation and information technology,” he said.
