THE PEAK BODY representing the Australian legal profession has expressed alarm at the Federal Government’s admission that it mistakenly deported an Australian woman and wrongfully detained more than 30 other Australians, claiming the revelations highlight serious flaws in our immigration detention system.
“At the time, the [LCA] said that there appeared to be an absence of checks and balances in Australia’s immigration detention centres. These recent — and very unfortunate — developments only strengthen our argument,” the president of the LCA, John North, said.
