Law firms Ashurst, Chalk & Fitzgerald and Gilbert + Tobin have been consulted as the New South Wales Law Society plans and launches it reconciliation action plan.
President of the Law Society, Justin Dowd said the Law Society is committed to bringing meaningful and lasting change.
“This is a great opportunity to cultivate a legal profession where Aboriginal peoples can thrive personally and professionally by building new relationships, providing new opportunities for Indigenous lawyers and countering misinformation and misunderstanding.
“We acknowledge that redressing the balance in areas such as educational opportunity, over representation in the prison system and life expectancy is of critical importance, both for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and for the well-being of our nation.â€
As part of its Reconciliation Action Plan, the Law Society has established an Indigenous Issues Committee that will engage in law reform and policy development on issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in NSW.
As part of the plan, the Law Society wants to launch an Indigenous Solicitors’ Fund, providing financial support for Indigenous students and young lawyers, as well as a high school outreach program, with role model talks from Indigenous lawyers and law students, encouraging Indigenous high school students to consider law as a career.
