INDIGENOUS AUSTRALIANS in the Northern Territory and South Australia should have access to better, professional and culturally appropriate legal support after legal aid services to the group were tendered for this month.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock announced last week that “selected providers are expected to start delivering services on 1 February 2006”.

“This will provide increased certainty for service providers and a sharpened ability to distribute resources to those in need of legal aid services,” Ruddock said.

He said the government was committed to seeing better outcomes for indigenous Australians, “and ensuring value for money” in their legal aid services.

As part of the tendering process, information sessions and workshops will be conducted in Darwin, Alice Springs and Adelaide.
