Transactional lawyers in demand overseas
As work in transactional practice picks up across Europe, Australian banking, finance and corporate lawyers are in demand, according to a legal recruiter.

While recruitment of Australian lawyers in Europe is usually limited, those with banking, finance or corporate experience could be in luck given the current market conditions, according to Taylor Root senior consultant Caitlin Bookless.
Ms Bookless said the differences between Australia's common law system and the European civil law system meant it is “virtually impossible” for Australian litigation lawyers to work in the European courts.
However, lawyers with international transactional experience could find work at global firms' European offices.
“The transactional areas are really picking up at the moment, and we are seeing a lot of movement in banking and finance and to some extent corporate,” Ms Bookless said.
Ms Bookless said Amsterdam, Milan and Paris are good centres for international work. Also Brussels, being the centre for competition law in Europe, always has high demand for competition lawyers, she said.
