FREEHILLS MANAGING partner Gavin Bell says Asia holds a lot of promise for large law firms to grow in the face of diminished opportunities in Australia, but he does not see any need for new offices in the region.

Unlike some other large firms, Freehills has only one office in Singapore, and associated offices in Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. But in this week’s The Whole Truth interview, Bell says this approach is driven by Freehills’ clients.

“Some law firms have chosen to open a range of offices in different countries. We have been quite specific about [whether] we want to have an office, but also quite specific about where we want to operate.

“So we do a lot of work in Asia in countries where we don’t necessarily have offices.”
