Moores, a commercial practice with offices in Box Hill and Mornington, has created the model to give charitable organisations access to legal advice at a limited cost.

Under the program, Not-for-Profit Assist, organisations can sign up for tiers of membership, entitling them to access a “health check”, a dedicated advice line, online resources and seminars.

Moores principal Catherine Brooks said the program aimed to open the door for not-for-profits to access legal advice.

“It means that we’re actively breaking down the barriers that might prevent our clients from calling us,” she said.

“We’re saying to the sector ‘don’t worry about being hit with a surprise legal bill - just call us and if we can provide you with the answer over the phone we will’.”

Where more complex advice is needed, Moores will offer to do the work on a fixed-fee basis, Ms Brooks confirmed.

From a business perspective, Ms Brooks said the model allows the firm to establish deeper relationships within the sector.

“This means that we get to continue to build on our role as a trusted adviser to the sector and form sticky relationships with movers and shakers in the industry,” she said.

“This is a big differentiator in the legal market and means that we get to continue to build trust with our clients whilst delivering work for organisations that appreciate our value.”

Ms Brooks suggested the model provides an alternative to pro bono services, which many smaller organisations rely upon.

“Many of our Not-for-Profit clients come to us, instead of seeking pro bono support elsewhere, because they require our expertise in the sector,” she said. “We have a team of lawyers that specialise in the Not-for-Profit sector and our firm as a whole exists to support ‘For Purpose’ organisations achieve their mission.”
