John Cain, the managing partner of Maurice Blackburn for over 10 years until 2002, is rejoining the firm.

Cain, the son of the former Victorian premier John Cain Jr, was the Victorian Government Solicitor for five years until March this year. He was caught up in the storm of controversy that followed the appointment of 28 year-old Diana Karamicov as Victoria's associate crown prosecutor last year.

Cain had ultimately approved the appointment which led to the resignation of the Victorian director of public prosecutions, Jeremy Rapke QC, who was behind Karamicov's promotion, after allegations that Rapke had acted improperly.

Cain returns to Maurice Blackburn as the national special projects manager. He was the managing partner of the firm from 1991 until 2002, later becoming the CEO of the Law Institute of Victoria prior to becoming the Victorian Government Solicitor in 2006.

CEO of Maurice Blackburn, Greg Tucker, said Cain will bring "enormous experience and insight to all practice areas," following the promotion of 17 plaintiff lawyers to senior roles.

Promotions to principal, senior associate and associate levels were made across several states and territories, chiefly in Sydney and Melbourne.

Practice areas where lawyers were promoted included Employment and Industrial, Personal Injuries, Major Projects, Medical Negligence and Social Justice Practice.
