Senior partner of Arnold Bloch Leibler and co-chair of Reconciliation Australia, Mark Leibler, has been appointed as co-chair of an expert panel on the constitutional recognition of Indigenous Australians.

Announced late last month by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Leibler will head the new panel with Professor Patrick Dodson, with the first formal meeting to be held early this year.

The panel which comprises Indigenous and community leaders, legal experts and parliamentary members, was formed as part of the Government's plans to progress the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Australian Constitution. The panel will provide advice to the Government regarding possible options for constitutional change.

"This is an exciting project for Australia and it is a great honour and privilege to be asked to play a central role in achieving meaningful constitutional reform for Indigenous Australians," Leibler said.
