WA open to tenders for Aboriginal legal services
Western Australia’s Department of Justice is currently seeking tenders for an Aboriginal community-controlled organisation that will provide vital family violence prevention legal service within the Perth metropolitan area.
Providing culturally sensitive, legal and related services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the service would work with people who are either experiencing or recovering from family violence or sexual assault, announced Department of Justice Director-General Dr Adam Tomison late last week.
Commenting on the tender applications, Dr Tomison said that more than 200 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within the Perth metropolitan area had accessed the services from the current provider over the 2020-21 period.
“The impact of family and domestic violence is far-reaching and extends to poor mental health outcomes, homelessness and exposes children and young people to ongoing trauma, learning and behavioural problems,” Dr Tomison said.
“Responding to and preventing this violence is complex and requires a holistic and co-ordinated approach with related service providers.”
The tender is restricted to Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, in line with principles of self-determination and the government’s Aboriginal procurement policies. Other organisations may participate in the tender but only in partnership with an Aboriginal community-controlled counterpart.
