Based in Sydney, Natasha McHattan will advise clients located across Australia, Asia, the UK and Europe.

Ms McHattan is an experienced restructuring and insolvency lawyer with prior roles across top-tier practice and consulting.

Herbert Smith Freehills partner Paul Apathy said the firm would benefit from Ms McHattan’s specialist experience in insolvency and restructuring.

“Natasha has extensive experience in insolvency, restructuring and litigation, as well as advising corporate clients on matters relating to governance and dealing with financial distress,” Mr Apathy said.

“She has strong links to the restructuring and insolvency sector in Australia, having worked with insolvency practitioners, financial institutions, businesses and creditors dealing financial distress, including in respect of [workouts], appointments, enforcement and recovery actions. We are thrilled to have such an experienced lawyer on the team.”

Ms McHattan joins Herbert Smith Freehills following a period as an independent consultant working with law firms, private clients and a major bank.

“I am excited to return to practice with the Herbert Smith Freehills RTI team. I look forward to working with this group of [high-calibre] lawyers to assist our clients during these challenging market conditions,” Ms McHattan said on her move.

She was most recently legal director at the Australian Restructuring & Turnaround Association (ARITA) where she provided technical guidance on legal issues affecting insolvency practitioners.

Ms McHattan also provided legal input into ARITA’s inquiry and consultation submissions, including appearing before the Senate economics committee, and participating in various government policy review bodies.
