On Thursday morning, the Royal Commission into the Management of Police Informants (RCMPI) will resume its public hearings, over two months after concluding its evidence of criminal barrister Nicola Gobbo over an explosive week of revelations.

The RCMPI will examine the policy and procedure needed to strengthen human source handling, particularly informers with legal obligations of confidentiality and privilege. It will then look at how to manage the information obtained from such sources.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Wendy Steendam will give evidence first and will be followed by former chief constable of Merseyside Police, Sir Jonathan Murphy, next week.

Earlier this week, Victorian Attorney-General Jill Hennessy extended the RCMPI’s original July deadline to hand over a report. It will now be handed down in November and will do so with an additional $11.5 million funding boost to complete recommendations.

“Given the seriousness of the matters involved, it’s important the royal commission is able to fully complete its vital work to preserve the integrity of the justice system,” she said.
