Firms: MinterEllison (SMEC); DLA Piper (Surbana Jurong)

Deal: SMEC Holdings has been acquired by Surbana Jurong Private.

Value: $451 million

Area: M&A

Key players: The team advising SMEC was led by MinterEllison partner Tim Watkin (pictured), with assistance from special counsel Sudharshan Senathirajah, senior associate Keith Tan, senior associate Kelly Griffiths and associate Amy Hirth.

Deal significance: SMEC was established by the Australian federal government in 1949 to build the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme and was privatised in 1993. It has 75 offices worldwide and specialises in transport, energy and water projects.

Surbana Jurong is a Singapore-based consultancy firm and a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore’s state investment group Temasek.

The acquisition will see SMEC become a subsidiary of Surbana Jurong. It will retain its management team and brand name.

The combination of the two parties will give them an extensive global presence, with offices in Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and North and South America, employing more than 9,400 professionals.
