Deal significance: Gilbert + Tobin advised Nine on the acquisition of Win’s Adelaide television station and an option to buy Channel 9 Perth, also owned by a company associated with the Win Corporation. Together, these acquisitions will expand Channel Nine’s metropolitan free-to-air network to cover all major capital cities. Nine’s acquisition coincides with its securing of the broadcasting rights to international cricket played in Australia. In the last 12 months, G+T has also advised Nine on securing NRL broadcast rights, the sale of the ACP Magazines business and its recent debt restructure by a scheme of arrangement. Atanaskovic Hartnell advised Win Corporation (Australia’s largest commercial television network), with whom they have a longstanding relationship, having advised WIN on the separate acquisitions of Channel 9 Adelaide and Channel 9 Perth in 2007. As part of the transaction, WIN and Nine renewed their longstanding affiliation agreement under which Nine’s program schedule is broadcast throughout the WIN network.
