Ian Brown has been elected as the 2014 president of the Queensland Law Society (QLS) Council.
Ian Brown has been elected as the 2014 president of the Queensland Law Society (QLS) Council.
Brown (pictured), who is a principal of Maurice Blackburn in Brown Plains, is currently the Council’s vice president.
Michael Fitzgerald will be the Council’s deputy president and Deborah Awyzio will be vice president. Fitzgerald, a banking & finance expert, is a consultant at Ashust. He is also a member of the Law Council of Australia Financial Services Committee and the Banking and Financial Services Law Association.
Awyzio is the principal of DA Family Lawyers, a Brisbane CBD family law firm. She is also president of the Family Law Practitioners’ Association (Qld), a member of the Family Law Pathways Group Steering Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee for Masters of Family Law program with the College of Law.
Ordinary members of the Council will be: Christine Smyth, Bill Potts, Kara Cook, Danielle Keyes, Kenneth Taylor, Paul Tully, Elizabeth Shearer and Christopher Coyne.
All new Council members will assume their roles on 1 January.
Current president Annette Bradfield said the 2014 Council would oversee the strategic and policy direction of the profession and the change to a modern corporate governance structure.
She added: “I wish everyone the best of luck in their Council roles for the coming year reviewing and making submissions on legislation, and maintaining the highest standards of professional development, ethical and professional conduct.”
